Custom Color Contact Lenses – Are They Worth It

by Mike Rigby

Custom color contact lenses come in two types, prosthetic and special effects contact lenses. They can be manufactured to hide an eye defect or just to simply hide an eye injury and also to be used as special effects in the world of theatre and movies. In this article, we will try to discuss both.

Prosthetic Custom Color Contact Lenses

Hand painted prosthetic custom color contact lenses are mostly hand made and are made to look as close to a normal human eye as possible. Their primary purpose is to replace an eye which has been damaged beyond repair and are often so close to the real thing that you would be hard pressed to tell that them them from the real thing.

Custom, soft lenses are made from special materials that are comfortable to the eye and able to bond with the multi-layered pigments used to create the depth and definition similar to a real eye

As a result of being one of a kind, custom made prosthetic contact lenses are very expensive and can even cost up to a few thousands of dollars. Due to their uniqueness, manufactures are often reluctant to offer any kind of refund as they are only suited to the individual that they were manufactured for.

An initial consultation must be made with specific companies who offer this service and they will not substitute existing medical records for a complete examination. Patients can be color-matched during the initial consultation, fitted and measured, and photographed. Specific needs will also be evaluated at this time.

Prosthetic lenses require regular maintenance as with any other contact lens. Lenses last one to two years if cared for properly. Custom lenses can be made to correct most vision problems except for astigmatism.

Custom Made Special Effects Color Contact Lenses

Special effects custom color contact lenses have been used in movies and theatrical production for many years before they were available to the general public. If you search the Internet, you will be able to many online stores that offer these lenses for sale.

Before you get too carried away and rip out your wallet, it is wise to see an eye doctor prior to making any purchases. Although special effects lenses are mostly just that, they can also be manufactured to correct sight.

Every contact lens is made to order as per the customers request and can come as bloody or hemorrhaged eyes, aged eyes, cataracts, blind effects, and mirrored eyes.

It is fair to say that custom color contact lenses are not cheap when compared to your normal contacts and some be treated with the care that they deserve if you want them to last for several years. Do this, and you will be able to enjoy them both professionally or just for fun.
