Experience New England’s Best Inns

by Tess Kirkpatrick

New England is a region steeped in Americana. Whether it’s simply enjoying the country villages where handmade quilts and antiques fill the shops, or taking in the majesty of a city such as Boston, where in a day you can learn more history by walking down the street than you might in a semester of American history, it is memorable to visit. The region, which includes six states, is both quaint and sophisticated and offers much for travelers to enjoy.

Boston is always to a great place to visit. There are dozens of interesting historic sites and tons of great shops and restaurants. Walk the Freedom Trail, shop along Newbury Street or head to the harbor and find the spot where the Boston Tea Party occurred. A few days in Boston are a must, but the region offers great beach towns on Cape Cod and Nantucket, as well as up and down the coasts of Maine and Connecticut. Take a path along Route 7 through Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont and enjoy the scenery and plenty of interesting little towns.

Travel writer Karen Brown offers up some excellent itineraries in her guidebook about New England, as well as on her website, Karen Brown’s World of Travel. As for where to stay, Karen Brown’s readers have voted and chosen the following four lodgings as the region’s best.

For a romantic retreat, the Lodge at Moosehead Lake in Greenville, Maine, is sure to put the spark back into your relationship. Voted by Karen Brown readers as New England’s “Most Romantic” lodging, this inn affords excellent views of its namesake lake, as well as the distant mountains. You might even see moose splashing in the water. There are five rooms in the main lodge, each decorated with a different theme. There are also four suites in the carriage house. One spectacular example is the Allagash Suite, which includes a queen bed suspended from the ceiling by boom chains that date back to the logging days of the 19th century. The room also includes a bathtub surrounded by river rock and a private deck boasting lake views.

If you want to truly experience New England charm, a trip to Vermont is a must. At Maple Leaf Inn in Barnard, you’ll find plenty of this signature charm, from the antiques to the hand-stenciled walls. Beautiful, hand-made quilts top the king-size beds in the guest rooms. Most the rooms include a fireplace and whirlpool tub. Homemade gourmet breakfasts are served by candlelight in the inn’s dining room at cozy tables for two.

If budget is a consideration, the Whaler’s Inn in Mystic, Connecticut offers a great location at a reasonable price. The inn won the Karen Brown Readers’ Choice Award for “Greatest Value” in New England. This Mystic inn is just a block from the Mystic River and historic Bascule Drawbridge, and some rooms feature a river view. The inn’s Hospitality Room, where continental breakfasts are served, has amenities for the business travelers, as well as newspapers and a selection of board games.

The Wauwinet on Nantucket Island combines everything you could possibly want in a New England Inn. It is little wonder why this luxurious oceanfront haven earned the Karen Brown Readers’ Choice Award as New England’s top “Splendid Splurge.” The guest rooms and cottages are beautifully appointed and each has been individually decorated, including fine linens and country antiques. The vast grounds include a private beach, and guests can enjoy the sea by land or on the Wauwinet Lady, which cruises Nantucket Bay. Natural history tours, cooking classes and even a ghost tour are just a few of the fun activities available at the inn. Topper’s, the inn’s award-winning restaurant, is an absolute delight and offers a selection of 20,000 different wines. The inn also has a full-service spa. With all this pampering, you may want to stay on as a permanent resident.
