You Can Learn To Water Ski In 1 Hour ii

by Lane \”Dawg\” Bowers

In less than one hour, you can learn how to slalom water ski, without falling and without any expensive lessons. It is not surprising that many people have a tough time trying to water ski, given that they lack proper preparation. By understanding and practicing proper form and technique, you can master the art of water skiing without the stress.

It all comes down to proper body position. This is something you can practice on dry land. Once you’re actually on the water, your body will know what to do. Start by rolling your shoulders back and forth, from front to back. Roll them back as far as they will go – it will feel as if your shoulder blades are pinching together. Expand your chest by taking a deep breath and arch your back. You have now assumed the correct upper body position for slalom skiing.

During your practice session, hold a short bar. A cane or short broomstick will do, but a water ski handle is best. Now that your upper body position is correct, it’s time to work on your hips. Pull back with your shoulders so that your upper body is leaning back. The angle should be roughly 45 degrees.

While leaning, move your hips upward, but avoid pulling in on your arms and letting go of the correct shoulder position. The rope should be pulling through your hips. Make sure that your knees are in the right spot as well: your ankles should be slightly behind the front of your knees. You shins will angle forward over your feet a bit, as if you were crouching.

Practice this positioning until you are very comfortable with it. Next, you can practice getting into the sitting position. This position give you control while slalom skiing. To practice the sitting position out of the water, keep the handle to the front of your knees, hold your knees together, and place your feet out a little wider than your hips.

Now that you’ve practiced these positions, you are ready to hit the water for some slalom skiing. Get the driver to start at a very slow speed. When the boat is just moving forward, you can get the feel of the water under your ski. Relax into the correct sitting position.

You will be ready to stand up once you can hold the sitting position comfortably for at least five seconds, without wavering. The driver will speed up to the slowest speed at which you can stand up so that you can practice moving from the sitting to the standing position, and back.

Get comfortable sitting, standing and moving on the ski. Once you’re comfortable, you can begin to experiment with movement. For now, stay within the wake of the tow boat. Congratulations! You are slalom water skiing! Carving within the wake requires a little more practice. Start slowly – don’t be too ambitious. Control you form and body position at all times, and you will remain safe and in control.
